COLLECTION 5: AWAKEN STRENGTH

In desperate times the Ethiopian Coptic cross stands as a woven cry of “awake”; with its endless latticework proclaiming eternity, protection, and identity for a people who never bowed to an empire. In the book of Isaiah, the call to, “Wake up, O Zion… clothe yourself with strength”,  the cross embodies one of those “beautiful garments,”— a visible sign of faith resting where chains once sat. The cross’ intricate lines move like a visual psalm of resurrection from captivity to covenant, from beaten-down to crowned.

What’s more, from 1993–1996, Hip-Hop and R&B carried that same command in drum and sample. “Awake” became boom‑bap and bars that refused numbness under violence, poverty and over‑policing. When emcees named their reality and called their people to knowledge of self, they fused the words of  Isaiah 52 with an iconic SP‑1200—shaking the dust from Zion’s Timbs, reminding the city’s daughter that her mind, voice, and body weren’t for sale.

AWAKEN STRENGTH lives where the Ethiopian cross hangs over a hoodie and gold rope chain—a fusion of ancient covenant and East Coast cypher. A people donning “beautiful garments” of style, sound, identity and spirit to reclaim honor long denied.
